Pundit thrilled as Leeds United in advanced talks over Joe Gelhardt deal
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...
Paul Robinson is thrilled to see that Joe Gelhardt is reportedly in advanced talks over a new contract to extend his stay at Leeds United.
The Yorkshire Evening Post reported on 30 June that Gelhardt, 20, is the first of many to enter discussions over a new contract with Crysencio Summerville said to be next on the list.
Gelhardt’s current contract expires in two years’ time but it seems as though Leeds are ensuring that he doesn’t go anywhere any time soon due to the potential he’s shown at Elland Road.
However, Robinson feels that Gelhardt has been under-used by the Whites in the last year and he hopes that if the striker is penning fresh terms, he’ll be able to play more.
“I can imagine he was getting frustrated last season because there were times where we were crying out for him to play,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.
“Missing Patrick Bamford was a huge part of last season and there were games when Gelhardt came in and he did extremely well but then he wasn’t given an opportunity.
“He was very unfortunate last season. He should have got a lot more game-time than he got. He showed what he could do when he came off the bench.
“The manager’s insistence on playing Dan James as a floating number nine was frustrating and Gelhardt would be more than within his rights if he was looking elsewhere for first-team football.
“But if he is going to sign a new deal and if he is going to play a bit more, it’s fantastic news.”
Gelhardt played 20 times in the Premier League for Leeds last season but only a quarter of those appearances saw him named in the starting line-up.
He scored two goals and supplied four assists in those games, scoring a last-gasp winner over Norwich in March that ended up being vital in Leeds’ Premier League survival.
In other Leeds United news, this Elland Road star has told Leeds he refuses to take part in pre-season preparations.
