Manchester City agree deal to sign Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips
Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips, according to The Athletic.
It has been reported that the Whites will receive £42million within added £3million in bonuses for the Yorkshire Pirlo to make the switch imminently.
Phillips is currently on holiday and due back at Thorp Arch next week, but it is shared that a deal could be finalised before then as he looks to move to the Premier League champions.
Leeds are also said to be closing in on City youngster Darko Gyabi in a separate £5million deal.
David Ornstein shared the news on his personal Twitter account which is no doubt set to leave Leeds fans gutted although it was expected in the end.
“Man City have reached agreement with Leeds to sign midfielder Kalvin Phillips. £42m + £3m — with Darko Gyabi joining Leeds separately for £5m fixed,” he wrote.
“Clubs now in process of finalising deal for 26yo England int’l to join.”
This is absolutely gutting.
Although we all expected it, Phillips leaving Elland Road is something that will never get easier, especially when he returns to face us twice next season and beyond.
£45million doesn’t seem to be an amazing price either, but with Phillips reaching 27 years old and a new contract seemingly impossible, it looks as though we have seen this as smart.
Now, it looks as though a major replacement will be needed.
Mo Camara at RB Salzburg and Tyler Adams at RB Leipzig have both been mentioned, and it will be interesting to see if they are brought in sooner rather than later.
We cannot be too harsh with Phillips for following his ambition, with the chance for consistent silverware as well as working with Pep Guardiola is seen as something that is too good to turn down.
