Leeds United want to sign Servette defender Diogo Monteiro in January
Leeds United are interested in signing young Portuguese defender Diogo Monteiro from Servette this month, according to journalist Daniel Visentini.
The Whites have already completed two January signings with the arrivals of Max Wober from Salzburg and Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim in a club-record deal.
And now they are looking to add young 17-year-old Monteiro to their ranks, with the central defender a deal that is “very possible” according to Belgian press.
Monteiro wouldn’t be able to join Leeds until right at the end of the window with Premier League clubs not able to sign players who are under-18 from Europe, but he turns 18 on January 28th.
Leeds have been renowned for their excellent scouting in recent years, and Monteiro seems like another player who has been dug out as a gem.
Despite being just 17-years-old, Monteiro is very highly rated and would probably join the academy set up with a view to moving into the senior team eventually.
It’s very possible too that this is the defender that was mentioned by the Yorkshire Evening Post and they got it mixed up, as they claimed it was a young player in Portugal, when it could actually be a young Portuguese player in Belgium.
Either way, the club are once again looking to secure the future of the squad with another signing of a top young talent, and it seems as though Servette will be unable to do anything to stop it.
It’s one to keep an eye on for the rest of this month, and alongside the likes of Cyrsencio Summerville, Wilfired Gnonto, Rutter, Charlie Cresswell and Sam Greenwood the future looks bright.
