Leeds United make approach to sign Hibernian star just like John McGinn

Leeds United are starting to make early moves ahead of the January transfer window.

After Leeds’ links with Martin Baturina, it’s clear that the Whites want to strengthen further in midfield and possibly even their defence.

With Leeds exploding to life in Daniel Farke’s new system, the January business could ignore the final third and reinforce from the back.

Leeds want John McGinn-esque transfer

Mulligan has already drawn comparisons to John McGinn at Hibernian, despite only moving there from Dundee over the summer.

The Scottish Daily Mail has reported in its print edition that Leeds have made an initial approach alongside Nottingham Forest.

Forest’s interest is said to be stronger at this point, with Leeds initially checking on Mulligan’s progress and the possible stance of a sale at Easter Road.

How does Josh Mulligan compare to John McGinn?

The easiest comparison is that McGinn made the switch from Hibernian to England, but he did start in the Championship with Aston Villa.

McGinn could also have signed for Leeds at the time, but he has gone on to make a huge name for himself at Villa Park instead.

Mulligan is primarily a right-wing-back, but can also play in the heart of midfield, with that versatility a real weapon, especially in this new 5-3-2 system.

If Leeds can keep Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha fit, the likes of Willy Gnonto and Noah Okafor off the bench are proving more than capable rotation options.

That opens the door to more signings in midfield and defence, hence the move for Mulligan, but most Leeds fans would still prefer another striker signing in January.

The Hibs star has been ever-present this season, and that reliability, recovering over five balls a game on average, could be a real weapon to have in rotation as the Premier League relegation fight gets tough.

Leeds have wasted big money before, so this could be a really smart move at Elland Road.
