Leeds United make contact with Juventus for Weston McKennie - Gianluca Di Marzio

Leeds United have made contact with Juventus about a potential deal for Weston McKennie this month, according to the reliable Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Whites have been linked with a move for the United States midfielder in the past, and the player is now looking to leave Serie A for more regular first-team football.

With Leeds keen to add to their midfield options during the January window after losing Mateusz Klich, Sky Sports Italia reporter Di Marzio says contact has been made about a deal and the clubs remain in negotiations.

“Leeds therefore tries for Weston McKennie,” he wrote on his personal website (24 January).

“There have already been the first contacts between the parties and now we will continue to talk to find a meeting point.

“First contacts therefore between the clubs to understand the feasibility of the operation: Leeds tries, Juve negotiates. Now we are just waiting for how the negotiation will evolve.”

Leeds have made a habit of bringing in great young talents with great athleticism and quality on the ball for relatively small fees, and McKennie would fit into that bracket too.

After shining in the Bundesliga and then in Serie A, McKennie has got plenty of experience at the highest level and already knowing the likes of Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson means he could see Elland Road as a viable option.

Midfield has been weakened with Klich leaving for DC United earlier this month, and while Marsch initially played his cards close to his chest about new arrivals it’s obvious the club are on the prowl.

Azzedine Ounahi has been linked with a move after a mega-money bid was tabled, and McKennie is in a very similar profile of player for the same position so could be an excellent alternative.

Leeds are clearly still active in the final week of the transfer window and the American would be an excellent addition to a side looking to kick on up the table and move away from relegation battles.

In other Leeds news, “high likelihood” that Leeds complete another signing before the window closes according to Phil Hay.
