Leeds United in advanced talks to sell Mateusz Klich with January mistake already on the cards

It’s mid-December and Leeds United look set to make their first mistake of the January transfer window already.

Mateusz Klich could be on his way out of Elland Road this summer, ending a five-and-a-half-year stint in West Yorkshire.

The 32-year-old has played 192 times in all competitions for the Whites, helped win promotion to the Premier League as a mainstay of Marcelo Bielsa’s side and helped his team stay in the top flight for three seasons.

However, Jesse Marsch has failed to see the value of Klich this season, to a degree.

The Poland international has played 11 times in the Premier League with all 11 of those appearances being as a substitute, with his longest time on the pitch amounting to just 31 minutes.

He’s played twice in the Carabao Cup too, scoring twice against Barnsley in a 3-1 win in August.

Klich also scored a screamer in the 2-1 win over Elche last week in a friendly match in Spain.

But could that be Klich’s final act as a Leeds player on the pitch.

According to MLS Soccer, DC United are “in advanced talks” to sign the Leeds United midfielder.

It is understood that while the “deal isn’t 100% done”, it is close to completion, meaning the curtains are closing at Elland Road for one of the club’s modern-day heroes.

Klich hasn’t been a Kalvin Phillips, a Raphinha, a Patrick Bamford or a Pablo Hernandez.

He’s just been Matuesz Klich.

An indestructible bundle of energy, who’s great both going forward and being called upon to defend.

Sure, he’s declined in the last year and a half. But who have Leeds got to stand in when Klich goes?

Adam Forshaw is always a change of wind away from an injury and Darko Gyabi is almost completely untested at this level on a competitive basis.

Leeds will have to go into the market to replace Klich but that’s easier said than done because Tyler Adams and Marc Roca have the central midfield spots nailed down.

A good player won’t join Leeds in January to sit on the bench.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites look set to sign the new Jude Bellingham.
