Leeds United allow Joe Gelhardt to make decision on loan destination for January transfer

Leeds United will allow Joe Gelhardt to choose his own destination for a January loan exit this month, according to a report from Football League World.

The Whites youngster has found himself down the pecking order after the arrival of Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim earlier in the window for a club-record transfer fee.

Jesse Marsch revealed that there were internal discussions taking place about the short-term future of 20-year-old Gelhardt, and it can now be shared that those talks have led to this decision being taken.

“Joe Gelhardt has been handed control of his future this month with Leeds United allowing the striker to select the club he wants to join on loan, sources have revealed to Football League World,” they wrote (18 January).

“Sources have indicated to Football League World that ‘more than half the Championship’ are interested in signing Gelhardt on loan, with Leeds pushing the decision of what the short-term future holds onto the 20-year-old.”

Trust

There is clearly a lot of trust in Gelhardt and his ability to shine in the Championship, so allowing him to choose his own destination for his development is a smart move.

Wherever he goes, it’s clear that he will command a starting place and regular football after his performances for Leeds in the Premier League last season and this.

But with so many options ahead of him in the pecking order like Patrick Bamford, Rodrigo, Crysencio Summerville, Willy Gnonto, Jack Harrison and Brenden Aaronson, it makes no sense for him to stay beyond this window.

Letting Gelhardt go and play regularly in the Championship and develop will be great for him this season, and then we can re-evaluate his future in the summer.

It’s nice to see Leeds putting their faith in the player to perform wherever he sees as the best fit for himself, and with interest not in short supply it seems an exit is basically inevitable at this point.

In other Leeds news, the Whites are lining up a bid for a young defender in another January move according to Phil Hay.
