Leeds United forced to spend half of FA Cup prize money already

Leeds United have secured themselves a payday by reaching the FA Cup semi-final.

The Whites travelled to the London Stadium on Sunday knowing that the winner against West Ham would seal a place at Wembley.

Pascal Struijk was the match winner as he netted the winning penalty after Daniel Farke’s side so nearly threw it all away in added time.

For the first time since 1987, the Yorkshire outfit will feature in the final four of the historic competition and reap the rewards.

The financial benefits are there for Leeds after reaching the semi-final, but over half of their prize money has already been spent.

Leeds United prize money revealed after FA Cup progress

The Whites made things extremely difficult for themselves, having thrown away a 2-0 lead by conceding in the 93rd and 96th minutes.

That summed up a back-and-forth encounter in East London, as Leeds created fewer chances but took theirs to secure a massive victory.

That will see the LS11 outfit feature at Wembley for the first time since the Championship play-off final defeat against Southampton in 2024.

Farke will be hopeful of a better result against Chelsea, with the prospect of securing further prize money to take their running tally to £2million.

Reports suggest that Leeds have already earned £964,000 for reaching the semi-final and could more than double that in the coming weeks.

That may be necessary as Leeds have already spent half of that fee on a fine that the Premier League slapped them with in March.

Leeds have already spent £530,000 of FA Cup prize money

That fee, just short of £1m, will certainly come in handy at Elland Road, but has already been cut by upwards of 54 per cent.

Leeds were fined £530,000 by the Premier League in late March for delaying kick-offs and restarts on nine occasions this campaign.

The LS11 outfit were used as an example to showcase the rules and have been threatened with further action for any future infringements.

That has already diminished the significance of FA Cup prize money, so there will be a desire to avoid any further financial sanctions.

Leeds won’t necessarily mind after reaching a semi-final with the potential of reaching a final with a win over Chelsea at Wembley.
