Harry Redknapp ready to take Leeds United job, wants Premier League survival bonus and no wage
Harry Redknapp has admitted that he is ready to take the Leeds United job and work for free with a bonus for keeping them up, speaking to talkSPORT.
The Whites sacked Jesse Marsch last week (6 February) but is yet to be replaced after the club ran into trouble appointing prime candidates Carlos Corberan, Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola.
Reports on Thursday (16 February) claimed that Redknapp was ready to take the job at Elland Road, and speaking to talkSPORT's breakfast show (17 February, 9:47am) he revealed he'd be open to doing it without a wage but doesn't expect to take the job.
“I would do it but it coincides with Cheltenham week and I can’t miss Cheltenham," he said. "I really can’t do it, I can’t give that up.
"No [there was no conversation]. I don’t know where it’s come from Ray. Someone rang me yesterday and I said, ‘what are you talking about? It’s not April 1st is it?’“
"It came out of the air, but no, no.
"I would think about going back, I love it. I wouldn’t say no anywhere, but I’m not going to get the Leeds job. Not a chance. That’s not a conversation.
"But if someone asked me to go in, I’d go in with no wage just bonus for keeping them up. That’s the move.”
Option
Leeds do not have a list of candidates queuing up outside the door at Elland Road to take over, and especially not with the experience of someone like Redknapp.
Skubala has done well in his two games as boss so far, but ultimately we need results and have only picked up one from those two games against Manchester United which isn't really helpful.
Now with crunch games against Everton and Southampton coming up, results are more important than performances and if the experience of a coach like Redknapp can earn us those points then we'd be all for it.
The fact he's willing to do it without a wage helps to as it means the financial burden is eased, and the club can trust that someone who knows what they are doing is in charge, with Skubala alongside him potentially to help the transition.
It's an intriguing option and while it may not be the most likely or the most popular, it would be silly to entirely rule it out to be honest with the position we're in.
