Max Wober: Leeds United set to be burdened with £12m flop amid Werder Bremen woes

Max Wober’s hopes of securing a permanent move to Werder Bremen look set to be dashed after a wretched season for the Leeds United loanee.

That is according to German football expert Keven Bader, who exclusively told MOT Leeds News that he cannot see the Bundesliga outfit exercising their option to extend the defender’s stay at Weserstadion.

Wober has been a hugely underwhelming signing for Leeds since being recruited from Red Bull Salzburg for around £12million in January 2023.

The Austrian was one of many to seek a move away from Elland Road when Leeds were relegated that summer, and after spending the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach, he played a background role in the Whites’ promotion to the Premier League last term.

Injuries have decimated his season on loan at Bremen so far, and that may put pay to Leeds’ chances of offloading Wober to the German team this summer.

Max Wober beset by injuries again

When Wober joined Monchengladbach on loan, he declared he was a “warrior”, as he tried to endear himself to the club’s fans.

After scoring two goals in 27 outings, the German team decided against signing him permanently as they didn’t want to meet Leeds’ asking price. Since then, injuries have kept Wober on the sidelines more often than not.

Wober’s injury record

Indeed, this season, Wober has barely featured for Bremen, with various hamstring and muscular problems keeping him out of the team.

Bremen are understood to have an option to buy Wober for around £3-3.5m this summer but Bader cannot see that happening.

He said: “Maximilian Wober has had a very difficult time due to injuries, which at the time of writing has resulted in only 79 minutes of playing time this season.

“Most signs suggest that a permanent transfer to Bremen won’t happen because of his injury record.

“I’ve followed Wober since his time at Red Bull Salzburg. He is a stable and reliable defender who would have helped Bremen immensely if he were fit. It’s very unfortunate that things turned out this way.”

Wober’s contract at Leeds runs until 2027 so they still have time to get a fee for him. But with his injury issues, that may be a a difficult task.

Wober suffers yet another injury setback

In early March, Wober hinted that he was inching closer to being back fit, but there was still a way to go before being at 100 per cent.

The Austria international, who has played just 28 times for Leeds, will hope to be fit for this summer’s World Cup, as his country prepares for a group stage with Algeria, Argentina and Jordan.

But according to reports coming out of Austria, Leeds loanee Wober left the national team training camp on Saturday due to a muscle complaint.

That may severely hurt his World Cup chances. Plus, Bremen are just four points above the Bundesliga relegation zone.

For the time being, it doesn’t seem like he will be able to help in that relegation battle, either. Things are just going from bad to worse for Wober.
