Sheffield United want to sign ex-Leeds star who Patrick Bamford said is ‘really good guy’

Patrick Bamford has started to show his worth at Sheffield United, only weeks after arriving on a free transfer at Bramall Lane.

Bamford left Leeds as a free agent after promotion to the Premier League and didn’t actually secure a move for quite some time.

Chris Wilder offered Bamford a lifeline at Sheffield United, and he has certainly taken it, with five goals in 10 Championship appearances already.

Bamford is shining in South Yorkshire, and he could be joined by a familiar Leeds face very soon.

Joe Rothwell to join Bamford at Sheffield United

Joe Rothwell was central to Leeds United’s promotion to the Premier League.

Despite that, Daniel Farke decided against signing him permanently, with Rangers swooping to sign the former Bournemouth star.

Unfortunately, things haven’t been the same at Ibrox, and he looks destined for the exit already in the January transfer window.

That’s where Sheffield United come in.

Darren Witcoop has reported that the Blades have made an approach to sign Rothwell on loan, as they look to beat other Championship clubs to a deal.

What has Patrick Bamford said about Joe Rothwell?

Leeds signed Sean Longstaff and Anton Stach instead of Rothwell, but that didn’t stop Bamford from showering the midfielder in praise from their time at Thorp Arch together.

Speaking on the My Mate’s A Footballer podcast for BBC Sounds at the start of last season, the ex-Elland Road striker was impressed by his first impressions of Rothwell.

“The players we’ve signed have to be a good fit,” he said.

“We’ve signed Joe Rothwell, who is a really good guy who’s fitted in well.”

Rothwell’s two assists for Pascal Struijk as Leeds beat Sunderland in wild circumstances last season were the major highlights.

Stepping into midfield with Ao Tanaka while Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev were injured, they were a huge part of Farke’s success and the Championship title lift.

With Wilder and Sheffield United believing they can push for the play-offs in the second half of the season, the likes of Bamford and Rothwell could be key to that.
