Andrea Radrizzani and 49ers Enterprises locked in contingency talks amid Leeds United takeover - Phil Hay

Andrea Radrizzani and the 49ers Enterprises are currently in discussions about what happens with the projected takeover if Leeds get relegated.

The Whites are currently one point above the relegation zone after their 0-0 draw with Brentford at the weekend, leaving them in a precarious position for the rest of the season.

Speaking on the Phil Hay Show (23 January), The Athletic journalist shared that the club potentially dropping into the Championship has been the topic of talks recently.

“One of the big points of discussion, certainly recently, is what happens if the club go down?” he said.

“What happens if the club are relegated? There is confidence at Elland Road that they will stay up and the feeling that they will be okay in the end, but clearly a club that are valued at around half a billion pounds in the Premier League are not worth anything like half a billion pounds in the EFL.

“There would need to be, certainly in the 49ers Enterprises eyes, some sort of contingency for what happens if come May, Leeds are no longer a Premier League club.

“That as we understand it has been one of the key points of the discussions.”

Normal

It’s pretty normal that these things would be part of future negotiations for a takeover, especially considering the value of the club is so dependant on being in the Premier League.

There is confidence at the club about being safe because we have invested in the summer heavily and also this month, and it would take a horrible turn of events for us to be one of the three worst teams in the league this season.

But the 49ers would be crazy not to negotiate a different price for the club if that did happen, and they’re a sensible business that know what they’re doing.

This takeover is almost definitely going to happen this year in the summer rather than January 2024 when the option officially triggers, so this is just a standard part of negotiations.

It seems obvious that this is a thing and it isn’t something that fans should be worried about, but it’s interesting to note that this hasn’t been spoken about before or dealt with previously.

In other Leeds news, one Championship club are looking to do a £4m deal for one starlet this month.
