Some Leeds fans thrilled by ‘exceptional’ U23s ace in 5-0 win: ‘Phillips long-term replacement’
Leeds United fans were thrilled with what they saw from young midfielder Alfie McCalmont on Sunday as he scored in the Under-23s’ 5-0 win against Hull.
McCalmont, 19, has had an impressive season for Carlos Corberan’s side and even made his first and second appearances for the senior squad earlier in the term when Marcelo Bielsa played him in the Carabao Cup against Salford and Stoke.
And now there are increasing calls for him to get even more game-time in the first-team after a goalscoring display at Thorp Arch on Sunday.
McCalmont rounded off a 5-0 win against Hull’s Under-23s in the 79th minute after a slick passing move by the Leeds youngsters.
Leeds face Arsenal in the third-round of the FA Cup on Monday night and Bielsa is bound to make several changes to his overall match squad.
Illan Meslier and Robbie Gotts will earn their Leeds debuts at the Emirates but there are certainly going to be spaces up for grabs on the bench and McCalmont’s name will hopefully be one that Bielsa considers.
That is certainly what these Leeds fans hope anyway, with some even claiming the Northern Ireland Under-21 international is showing more potential than Kalvin Phillips did when he was breaking onto the scene in West Yorkshire.
