‘Disgraceful’ – Some Leeds fans hit out as Phil Hay relays news about ‘Disgusting power grab’

Leeds United fans have hit out at EFL chairman Rick Parry after he backed a radical – and controversial – shake-up of English football.

As reported by ESPN, Parry’s proposal would have seen top teams in the Premier League gain more control over what happens in the English game.

It would also see the Premier League reduced to 18 teams and give more power to the nine teams who’ve been in the top-flight the longest with the EFL Cup and Community Shield also being abolished.

Manchester United and Liverpool – who’ve backed the proposal – plus Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester City, West Ham, Southampton and Everton would get more power on any votes.

However, The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has relayed an official statement by the Premier League, which has hit out at Parry for publishing his plan and said that the proposal could “have a damaging impact on the whole game”.

The Premier League also described their disappointment in the EFL chief.

Leeds fans are clearly happy that the idea has been written off by the Premier League but that hasn’t stopped them from hitting out at Parry.

The Yorkshire giants spent 16 years in the EFL before winning promotion as Championship champions last season.

The club’s supporters have known a lot of hardship and felt a lot of injustice from the powers that be in the EFL over that decade-and-a-half.

Clearly, even though Leeds are out of the EFL, the fans still hold the organisation in contempt.
