'Worried' – Exclusive: Pundit reacts to explosive Bielsa report as Leeds seek contract extension
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that he is “worried” about the possibility of Bielsa not signing an extension at Leeds, after an explosive report said Lionel Messi wanted him at Barcelona.
Robinson added that he is hoping for some “good news” soon but stated that he could only see Bielsa signing a 12-month extension with Leeds.
He said that’s the way Bielsa works and it’s a sign of how well he’s done at Leeds that clubs such as Barcelona are being touted as potential new employers.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “I’ve been worried about this for the last 12 months.
“I’m very surprised he hasn’t been touted for some of the bigger jobs in the Premier League, because of the job that he’s done and how well regarded he is.
“I read that report [Messi and Barcelona] and worried even more because it wasn’t a middle of the road player who was thinking his club should employ Bielsa – it’s Lionel Messi and Barcelona.
“When clubs and players start thinking about your manager, obviously the Argentina link is there… it shows how big the achievement is that a player like Messi would want Bielsa at Barcelona.
“Until he signs that contract – and his contract’s up this week – until he signs that extension there will always be doubt.
“Let’s hope we get some good news quickly. He’s only ever worked on one-year contracts so I don’t expect this to be any different – that’s just how he works.”
Leeds are still confident that Bielsa will sign a new deal and interestingly, the Sun was forced to take down their story about Messi and Barcelona.
Other reports on the story are still live – like this one in the Mail – but the Sun’s original story obviously put someone’s nose out of joint.
