‘Without a shadow of a doubt’ – Exclusive: Pundit urges Leeds to take gamble on striker transfer
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has urged Leeds United to gamble in January and spend the money on a striker who will get them promoted.
Leeds are in the market for a new striker after Eddie Nketiah was recalled by Arsenal early from his season-long loan over a lack of game time.
Leeds can’t spend much money because of profit & sustainability rules, although they could spend and gamble on promotion. If they were to get promoted, Championship rules on profit & sustainability wouldn’t apply.
If Leeds gambled and didn’t get promoted then they would be in danger of a penalty.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson claims this is a gamble worth taking.
“I think they should have done it last year,” Robinson said. “They needed a 20-goal-a-season-striker and a left-winger and they would have got promoted last season.
“Every team in the top-six had at least one player who could get 20 goals, we had Kemar Roofe who scored 15 and we lost him in the summer.
“They should have taken the gamble last January when they were a few points clear, but now being nine points clear of third, it seems like a sensible gamble to take.
“Without a shadow of a doubt, with their resources, I’d do whatever I could to go up this year.”
One striker that Leeds have been linked with is Southampton’s Che Adams, although it’s not clear that he will be allowed to leave the club in January.
Many Leeds fans want to see Andrea Radrizzani spend this January but it would still mean finding the right striker in a window where that’s generally far from easy.
Dwight Gayle is another striker who’s been talked about but he’s never been able to produce the goals in the Premier League, and if Leeds do look to buy they have to look to the future.
