Gnonto set for Leeds United fight after latest transfer update

This article includes exclusive comments from former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Willy Gnonto could be handed a new role at Leeds United this season.

Daniel Farke will be pleased with the progress his Leeds United side have made so far this summer, though the German will be well aware of the need for more.

It will be crucial that the Whites bolster their attacking options ahead of their return to the Premier League, but the latest update served as a blow to those requirements.

With that said, it could serve as a positive for Gnonto, who had a mixed season under Farke in the Championship.

Igor Paixao update could boost Gnonto’s chances at Leeds

It was reported on Monday (28 July) that Igor Paixao is set to move to Marseille, with Leeds missing out on their primary left-wing target.

However, Paul Robinson thinks that Gnonto could be set to battle with Largie Ramazani for that place in the team next season.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “Dan James is a shoo-in down the right-hand side. Didn’t miss many games last year. But the Premier League’s different.

“With the rigours of the Premier League, he is going to have to chop and change. But I think with Ramazani and Gnonto, the two of them can fight it out for that berth on the left-hand side.

“But they are going to have to bring more players in. Obviously, with Bamford and Mateo Joseph going, the need for a striker was there before those two players announced that they were going to be leaving.

“So the need now is to bring in cover, as well as an out-and-out striker, that they were looking at anyway.”

Farke must show more faith in Gnonto

While attacking reinforcements are needed at Elland Road, Leeds simply need to start utilising Gnonto more often.

The Italian was often a substitute for the Whites last season, despite being one of the most talented players in the league.

His versatility could be crucial for Leeds as they prepare for life back in the top flight.
