We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that he’s “100%” convinced that Joe Gelhardt is set to get his first taste of the Premier League this season.
The exciting 18-year-old attacker, who signed from Wigan for a fee of around £1m this summer, has been turning heads for the Under-23s.
He’s a powerful player who can play up top or in the number 10 role and he’s already scored four goals in Premier League 2.
Robinson claims Gelhardt is training with the first-team and Bielsa will know exactly what he’s capable of.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “I think Joe Gelhardt will be in the first-team before too long, 100%.
“I’ve said it before but squads are going to be stretched this season and players like Gelhardt will be used.
“He’s doing himself the power of good playing like he is doing for the Under-23s at the moment.
“He’s training with the first team, the manager trains the players available to him and he’ll be doing the murderball sessions on Wednesday.
“Bielsa will be seeing Gelhardt up close every week, he’s not just a manager who relies on reports from the Under-23s.
“He’ll see Gelhardt regularly and in my opinion, it’s 100% that Gelhardt will be coming into the Premier League squad.”
Gelhardt has already had experience of first-team football with Wigan, where he played 18 times in the Championship, scoring one goal.
Leeds have a lot of attacking options but not many players who can slot straight into the striker or the number 10- role.
That versatility could see him in the squad when the winter fixture list starts to bite.
