‘Whole country will be watching’ – Exclusive: Pundit makes big Leeds United ‘superpower’ claim

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has said “the whole country will be watching” when Leeds play Liverpool in the opening weekend of the Premier League.

He said it shows how big Leeds are and how much the Premier League needs them.

However, Robinson bemoaned the fact that it would be played in an empty Anfield saying that would be a “huge anti-climax”.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “What a brilliant game for Leeds as their first game back in the Premier League.

“You look at that fixture and it just fills you full of delight and joy, and then you remember that it’s going to be played in an empty stadium. It’s a huge anti-climax.

“Can you imagine a full Anfield? Leeds would easily sell out their allocation… A full Anfield on the first day of the season. Irrespective, I think it’s a game that everyone will want to watch and there aren’t many teams who come up from the Championship that you could say that about.

“It won’t just be Leeds and Liverpool fans who will be watching. The whole country will be watching. And that just shows you what a superpower Leeds are and how much the Premier League needs them.

“It’s a huge blow for fans and for the players that it’s in an empty stadium, but they’ll just have to make sure that they get to do it again next season when the fans are back.”

Leeds had a crack at a Premier League side last season when they played Arsenal in the FA Cup.

They lost 1-0 but gave a brilliant account of themselves.

Liverpool are another test entirely and it remains to be seen whether any new Leeds signings will arrive in time to make the cut for the first game of the season.
