‘Top player’ – Exclusive: Paul Robinson excited by reported Leeds pursuit of English centre-mid

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson is excited by the potential of Oxford United’s Cameron Brannagan after the midfielder was linked with a move to Leeds United.

Brannagan, 23, has been in superb form for the League One club this season, scoring seven goals and supplying six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions.

His form has led to speculation surrounding his future at the Kassam Stadium with Football Insider reporting in February that the midfielder has emerged on the radar of Championship leaders Leeds.

Brannagan will enter the final year of his contract in June and The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported in January that the former Liverpool player is going to be valued at £1million in the summer transfer window after attracting attention from the Premier League and Championship

Although there are top-tier clubs reportedly keen on Brannagan, ex-Leeds goalkeeper Robinson is unsure that he would be able to be a regular for Leeds if they win promotion.

However he does claim that as a player for a Championship club, the Oxford ace could be a really good addition to the side.

“[He’s a] decent player,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News when asked about Leeds’ interest in Brannagan.

“If Leeds are still in the Championship then he’d be a good buy but if they’re in the Premier League I think they’ve got to aim higher. Their target player needs to change in the Premier League.

“He’s a top player, though and he’s had a great season.

“I’d question whether he’d come into Leeds and play week-in, week-out in the Premier League, I’d question that. In the Championship though, he’d be a great buy.

“I do know that he’s a top player though and he could definitely be one for the future.”

Robinson makes a good point but Leeds have minimal options in the central midfield area and Brannagan could be a good player to bring in to add some depth.

Plus, at £1million, it is not as if the Whites would be taking a massive risk by signing the former England Under-20 international.

In other Leeds United news, fans have been reacting to this question about Elland Road, with one urging the club to use the money to sign Ben White.
