Ticket drama is unavoidable after new Leeds United mess – Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Dan Plumley has insisted that ticket prices will always be a thorny issue after the latest drama involving Leeds United and Huddersfield Town.

A lower reciprocal ticket price has eventually been agreed in the last 24 hours, but Town chairman Kevin Nagle kicked up a fuss after the Whites were said to turn down the chance to lower prices from £47.

The finance expert admitted that egos often emerge in negotiations between owners, making messy situations such as this one unavoidable at times.

“Football ticket prices are always going to be a thorny issue,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“You see this tit-for-tat narrative around some of the higher prices, and absolutely there’s a wider issue here in terms of ticket prices in the Championship across the board. It comes down, a lot of the time, to owners and motives, and almost an egotistical play in many senses, because if you do want to dig your heels in and do it this way, you can.

It goes to show that, stripping everything back, even ticket prices are negotiations between owners of clubs and that can get quite messy and remove it from a situation where it is about the fans and the price they have to pay.

It’s really difficult, there is an agreement that a lot of these tickets are overpriced, from what we would say is fair market value.

Again, you are at the mercy of owners and sometimes you get situations like this that are unavoidable.”
