Sonny Perkins set for Leeds United promotion as talks underway for Joe Gelhardt exit - Sky Sports pundit
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson expects Sonny Perkins to get more game time in the Leeds United first team with the wheels now in motion over Joe Gelhardt leaving Elland Road on loan.
MOT Leeds News exclusively revealed on Tuesday (10 January) that Leeds are in talks over sending Gelhardt, 20, out on loan to a club in the Championship.
Mirror Sport journalist Darren Witcoop claims that Wigan are close to re-signing their former striker on a temporary basis.
According to Robinson, a loan exit for Gelhardt could be good news for 18-year-old Perkins, who scored a late equaliser for Leeds in their 2-2 FA Cup draw with Cardiff at the weekend.
“He’s promising,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.
“I’ve not seen enough of him to say whether he will be a part of the first-team squad going forward. But if you look at Gelhardt and how he’s been used very sporadically despite his new contract, it shows how Perkins might be thought of.
“Only time will tell. It very much depends on what happens to Gelhardt in this window, there’s talk of him going out on loan. If that happens, that may push Perkins up the pecking order.
“Perkins’ form may be one of the reasons why they’re willing to do business with Gelhardt on loan so he can get some games.”
Perkins joined Leeds from West Ham in the summer.
He’s since scored seven goals in 10 Premier League 2 appearances and played twice for Jesse Marsch’s senior side.
The England youth international started in the 1-0 Carabao Cup loss at Wolves on 9 November before his goalscoring cameo at the Cardiff City Stadium.
