Sky Sports pundit shocked by USA refusal to start Leeds United ace Brenden Aaronson at World Cup

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson is shocked by Brenden Aaronson’s failure to make the USA starting line-up in their first two games at the World Cup.

Aaronson, 22, has been in superb form at Elland Road this season after joining the Whites from Red Bull Salzburg in the summer transfer window.

However, he’s had to make do with playing as a substitute in the USA’s draws against Wales and England in the group stages in Qatar.

Robinson has refrained from criticising the US too much because they’ve had two decent results that have left them in a favourable position to qualify for the knock-out stages of the competition.

However, he still finds Aaronson’s omission baffling.

I’m surprised. I’m really surprised, actually, because of his engine and his work rate,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

But you cannot criticise this USA team because they’ve not only had two decent results but two decent performances as well.

He’s not playing as much as I’d expect him to play, which surprises me really because he’s been doing very well.

When he has come on for the USA, he looks good.

He plays a very similar role to the one he does at Leeds but maybe a bit more disciplined by not closing down as freely as Leeds do.

Both of the American players have impressed me at this World Cup for Leeds.”

While Aaronson is struggling to start, Tyler Adams has been the star man for the USMNT in Qatar.

He put in a man-of-the-match-worthy shift against England on Friday and will no doubt start again, wearing the captain’s armband, against Iran on Tuesday.

In other Leeds United news, we can exclusively reveal that a takeover by the 49ers could be done within weeks.
