Sky Sports pundit reacts as Leeds United make move to sign Mergim Berisha

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Paul Robinson has insisted that Leeds United would be taking a “high risk” by signing Fenerbahce striker Mergim Berisha this summer.

The ex-Whites stopper admitted that while the price being under £5million is cheap, his record of seven goals in 30 games last season is nowhere near good enough.

It comes after Omer Celikbasli exclusively told MOT Leeds News on Wednesday [27 July] that Leeds had tabled a bid of £1.7million to sign Berisha, with the same amount potentially being demanded in wages.

“It’s a low-risk signing but it’s a chance,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“It’s seven goals in 30 games in a poor league, the Turkish league is nowhere near as strong as the Premier League, it’s not a huge return. He’s not exactly pulling up trees there, if you’re going over there and want to bring in a player from there, you’ll want him to have a big impact in the Turkish league, getting a bag full of goals.

“It’s a low-risk signing because it’s less than £5million, but it’s a chance you’re taking on a player that hasn’t done it yet. It’s high risk performance-wise.”

High risk.

Jesse Marsch has made it clear this summer that he is happy to target former players.

Berisha shined under the American at RB Salzburg, and others that did that have already arrived at Elland Road this summer for much bigger money than this.

Brenden Aaronson, Rasmus Kristensen and Tyler Adams all already had relationships with the coach and that can either backfire dramatically or work perfectly.

All three have shown bright glimpses in pre-season while over in Australia, although that doesn’t mean that Berisha will do the same and this is a big risk.

With Patrick Bamford, Joe Gelhardt and Rodrigo all capable in that role, one more big name is needed.
