Sky Sports pundit reacts as Leeds United line up bid to re-sign 'rough diamond' Alfonso Pedraza
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson is unsure on whether Kai Wagner or Alfonso Pedraza would be good enough to fix the issues at left-back for Leeds United.
Philadelphia Union’s Wagner, 25, has been linked with the Whites for a while and Phil Hay wrote on The Athletic website on 26 December that the German left-back is “one option they are looking at”.
Villarreal’s Spanish flyer Pedraza, 26, has also been linked with a return to Leeds after spending part of the 2016/17 season on loan at Elland Road.
La Razon reported on 29 December that Leeds are readying a bid to re-sign the former Spain Under-21 international and Villarreal could be willing to negotiate a sale.
Robinson, however, doesn’t believe either left-back is a good enough option for Leeds, suggesting that Andrea Radrizzani or the 49ers need to invest some cash in the squad.
“They’re two players who I suspect most fans and pundits in this country know little about,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.
“You’re looking at a rough diamond again when you’re in a position where you need players who are ready to go.
“I’d like to see players who are tried and tested at the top level and not players who you hope are hitting the ground running.
“Don’t get me wrong, they’ve had success with players like that before. Look at Raphinha.
“But rough diamonds don’t come around very often.
“For Leeds to secure Premier League safety, the importance is on signing a striker and a left-back.
“They have to get that right. Whether it’s Radrizzani or the 49ers to invest – however it’s going to work – they need strengthening.
“Wagner and Pedraza are risks because you don’t know how they’d react to the Premier League.
“Leeds need players that are statement signings, players that will almost guarantee performances every week because you know what you’re getting.”
In other Leeds United news, the club is thrashing out terms for an early January signing after this player jetted into the UK for a move.
