Sky Sports pundit issues strong Daniel Farke verdict as ‘unthinkable’ Charlie Cresswell exit update emerges at Leeds United

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United …

There is “no way” that Daniel Farke is going to let Charlie Cresswell leave Leeds United in January after recent injuries in defence, according to Paul Robinson.

The 21-year-old has only seen two minutes of Championship action since his only league start of the season on 12 August at Birmingham City, leading to Carlton Palmer to predict a certain midseason push for the exit in order to secure playing time.

Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth has since reported (28 November) that a previously “unthinkable” loan departure for the defender could now be on the cards when the transfer window opens, but in light of the recent absence for Pascal Struijk after hernia surgery Sky Sports pundit Robinson thinks it makes no sense to sanction Cresswell’s exit unless there are certain reinforcements on the way in.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News he said: “I think he had a good loan spell last season at Millwall that gave him some really good first-team experience. He’s a talented player, a really talented young player who will be playing in the Leeds first team at some point in the future.

“Whether the manager deems that to fit in the near-future or not is yet to be seen [but] with the injury to Pascal Struijk there’s no way he’s going to let players leave in January. He’s not going to let players leave that are good to him, that are useful to him.

“You look at the squad, the size of the squad, the bench, they’re a strong squad. Why would you weaken that? Unless you’re going to bring players in there’s no reason to let players go in January, especially player’s like Charlie Cresswell when you’ve got injuries in the squad.”

From Farke’s and Leeds United’s point of view it absolutely makes sense to retain a player like Cresswell in the squad, and arguably also to give him some more chances to contribute.

But from the youngster’s perspective, after extensive involvement at The Den last season, he development is stagnating at the moment so some regular games elsewhere are possibly more important than peripheral involvement in a promotion push.
