Sky Sports pundit defends Dan James as Leeds United ace suffers unfortunate turn of events
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...
Paul Robinson can understand why Leeds United ace Daniel James was substituted in and substituted out of the 2-2 draw with Southampton at the weekend.
Usually when a sub is subbed off, it’s an embarrassing moment for the player.
However, with 24-year-old James, he still managed 56 minutes as he came on for the injured Patrick Bamford in the first half before being replaced by Luis Sinisterra late on.
Robinson has defended James for being the victim of Jesse Marsch subbing him on and off at St Mary’s, saying that it made sense if anything.
“It’s under different circumstances because he came on early for Bamford so you can understand why he went off,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.
“He played for around an hour so if a player is substituted after an hour in a game, you don’t really question it.
“It’s only because he was brought on as a sub and then taken off that you talk about it.
“But in that heat and under those circumstances, I don’t think you can read much into it in all honesty.”
James missed Leeds’ win over Wolves on the opening day of the season through suspension so his 56-minute-long contribution at Southampton wash is first appearance of the 2022/23 campaign.
Last season was James’ debut at Elland Road and it’s fair to say he struggled to impress fans with just four goals in 35 appearances across all competitions despite being played up front a lot due to Bamford’s injury issues.
