Sky Sports pundit concerned as Phil Hay shares Illan Meslier news at Leeds United, Joel Robles to start v Manchester City

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has slight concerns about Joel Robles being set to play in goals for Leeds United when they meet Manchester City at Elland Road on 28 December.

Robles, 32, joined Leeds in the summer from Real Betis and is yet to play for the Whites in the Premier League.

However, Illan Meslier has been diagnosed with glandular fever [Phil Hay], meaning that Leeds’ regular number one might not be ready in time to play against the Premier League champions next week in the first competitive game back after the World Cup break.

Robles has been playing in goals for Jesse Marsch in recent friendly matches and while Robinson feels the Spaniard will be fine for the odd game, he worries about what he’ll be like if it becomes an extended period on the sidelines for Meslier.

“The worry is the length of time Robles hasn’t consistently played at a top level,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

He has played at the top level and we know that he can do it.

I wouldn’t have too much of a worry about him on a short-term basis but long-term, if it was to be Meslier being out for months, there may be an issue.

We won’t know for sure until we see what Robles can do.

“I don’t think it’s a big problem against Manchester City and it’s a phrase I hate because no game is a free hit when you’re Leeds United. But if they get points, it’ll be surprising.

It’ll be one of those games where if you get beaten, it’ll be understandable. If Meslier is to miss that game, it’s not as bad as him missing one against a relegation rival.

“I can’t phrase it another way and I hate to say it but it’s a free hit for Leeds so regardless of who they field, if Robles comes in and does well, then they’ve got away with it.

If they don’t and he concedes goals, we were expecting it with Man City.”

In other Leeds United news, talks are underway over this player quitting Elland Road for a high-paid contract.
