Sky pundit slams potential ‘silly’ Leeds United sale of Illan Meslier, braced for bids

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

It would be “silly” for Leeds United to sell Illan Meslier in the summer transfer window, according to Paul Robinson.

Meslier, 22, has emerged as an outstanding young goalkeeper in the Premier League and has already played over 110 times in senior matches for both the Whites and former club Lorient.

Understandably, that has led to the Frenchman being linked with a move away from Elland Road.

The Daily Mail reported on 4 April that the Yorkshire giants “are braced for bids” for Meslier with “top clubs” on his trail.

On 11 February, Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo claimed that Barcelona are eyeing up the France Under-21 international.

Ex-Leeds goalkeeper Robinson has rubbished the idea of selling Meslier due to Jesse Marsch’s options in that position already being light and lacking experience.

“It’s a difficult one because they’ve got no cover in that area at all,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

“[Kristoffer] Klaesson’s done okay this year but they’d have to replace Meslier and the cost to replace him would be as expensive as the money they’d bring in for him.

They’d have to find a top, number one goalkeeper so to sell Meslier for whatever they sell him for, they’d have to pay that to replace him.

It would seem to be a very silly situation to let him go.

“In all honesty, I can’t see the sense in letting him go.”
