By MOT Leeds News speaking to Paul Robinson

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Paul Robinson is thrilled to see Rodrigo playing “10 times better than” he did last season for Leeds United after he scored twice against Southampton on Saturday.

The 31-year-old has now scored three goals in Leeds first two games this season, which is half of what he managed in the entire 2021/22 campaign.

Rodrigo has often been criticised for his performances at Elland Road after becoming the club’s record signing for £27million back in 2020.

Robinson is happy to see him doing well and believes that’s entirely down to the player himself instead of anyone else.

However, he is baffled as to why he hasn’t been able to play this well before.

“Rodrigo’s getting the best out of himself,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

It shows that he’s had criticism over the last year, he’s lacked goals and you can make excuses for him for not being in the side and not being played in position.

But he’s finally living up to expectations now – this is what he should’ve been doing last season and the season before.

Leeds are really starting to see the most of his performances, not just his goals.

His performances are 10 times better than they were last year and it’s easy to question why it’s only now that we’re seeing that.

He’s not really playing a different role with Jesse Marsch, he’s playing in a similar position so you have to ask why it’s taken this long for him to come good.

But we’re not complaining because he’s playing some of his best football.”

Teams have only played two games each but Rodrigo, as it stands, is the top goalscorer in the Premier League.

The 31-year-old has now scored 16 goals since joining Leeds in the summer of 2020 having made 64 appearances across all competitions for the club.
