Sky Sports pundit raises questions as Leeds United employee lets slip Pascal Struijk news

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson can see why Leeds United would sort out a new contract for Pascal Struijk but admits questions are still to be asked about his future at Elland Road.

Struijk, 23, has played at left-back all season for Leeds due to Junior Firpo and Stuart Dallas being injured.

Leeds are also said to be looking to sign a new left-back ahead of January. Speaking on The Phil Hay Show podcast on 7 November (19m30s), The Athletic journalist Hay reported that there’s a “strong temptation” to sign one next month.

Struijk’s played well at left-back for Jesse Marsch and has been rewarded with a new contract.

It’s not yet been officially confirmed by the club but LUTV commentator Bryn Law said on 8 December that the Belgian-born Dutchman is the “recipient of a new contract“.

It’s as good as a confirmation and while Robinson is happy with the new deal, he wonders what will happen to Struijk once a new left-back is brought in.

“He’s had to play because they don’t have another left-back. I think when another left-back is signed, it’ll be interesting to see where he plays,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

Leeds are most secure at centre-half which means he lacks opportunities there and you can’t see him playing in the midfield instead of Tyler Adams in the holding role.

I know he’s playing every week now and he’s probably enjoying his run in the side. But it’s where he plays when they do eventually sign a left-back, which has been needed for a very long time. It’ll be interesting.

It’s a no-brainer for Leeds to sign him on a new contract because he can play at the back, at left-back and in the midfield.

His versatility is fantastic for a manager.

But from a player’s point of view, I just wonder where he fits in when and if they sign a new left-back.”

In other Leeds United news, talks are underway over this player quitting Elland Road for a high-paid contract.
