Paul Robinson reacts to major Leeds United transfer links with Florian Grillitsch
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...
Paul Robinson has insisted that it should be a priority to sign cover for Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips this summer.
The former Whites stopper admitted that the Whites cannot afford to let the Yorkshire Pirlo leave, but cover is desperately needed in numerous areas.
It comes after the Daily Mail reported that Leeds were in the market for Hoffenheim midfield Florian Grillitsch, who is out of contract this summer.
“This season has highlighted one thing and it’s highlighted the fact they struggle without Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.
“They’ve got no direct replacement in those positions so it’s led to putting square pegs in rounds holes. Performances and results without those two in the side haven’t been anywhere near the ones with them in the side.
“There are no direct replacements for them so that’s the key this season. Leeds shouldn’t sign a replacement for Phillips because it’s absolutely vital that he stays.
“You can’t afford to let Kalvin go but I think the priority this window is to add cover, a defensive midfielder like Kalvin and a number nine as well.”
Jesse Marsch will already have the wheels in motion in regards to his first transfer window in charge of the club.
We have seen that the American has had a meeting with Victor Orta to discuss targets, getting things in place ready.
Grillitsch being a free agent after this season makes him a perfect target as cover for Phillips, as he won’t cost anything.
Marsch will know the Austrian from his time in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig, so will have in mind where he could be used.
We could see a different strategy in the first window without Marcelo Bielsa, but Robinson is spot on, we need cover in these critical areas.
In other Leeds United news, this young prospect is quitting Leeds and turned out for his potential new club on Tuesday night.
