Sky Sports pundit predicts Liam Cooper to start v Chelsea as Leeds United update emerges
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...
Paul Robinson wants to see Liam Cooper make his first appearance of the season for Leeds United this weekend when they play against Chelsea at Elland Road.
Jesse Marsch’s Whites welcome the Blues to West Yorkshire on Sunday (21 August) as they aim to build on what has been a decent start to the new Premier League campaign.
Leeds have won four points from two games without their captain Cooper, who missed games against Wolves and Southampton due to injury.
He should, however, be fit to play against Chelsea this weekend and if he is, Robinson wants to see him return to the side at centre-back.
Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “Cooper comes back in for me.
“There aren’t really any leaders in that team, there aren’t many voices.
“Cooper is definitely that and they need that.
“Leeds are missing him, Luke Ayling and Stuart Dallas, who are three players who have a voice on the pitch as well as in the dressing room.
“If you look at the team at the weekend, there are new signings in there and there aren’t that many leaders with a voice.
“If Cooper’s fit, he comes back in as he’s the captain anyway.
“[Diego] Llorente and [Robin[ Koch have done okay but with the captain fit again, he comes straight back into the team because of everything he brings for you.”
Cooper was absent at St Mary’s last week even though Marsch confirmed that he was “eligible” for selection along with Adam Forshaw and Luis Sinisterra, who both played as substitutes.
Provided there are no new issues, Cooper should be back in the fold against Chelsea although injury expert Ben Dinnery says there’s only a 25 per cent chance he returns to play against the Londoners.
