Sky Sports pundit rages at Leeds United as Phil Hay shares Junior Firpo reveal

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson is raging over Leeds United’s failure to sign a new left-back in the summer transfer window after it emerged that Junior Firpo has suffered yet another setback.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Phil Hay Show podcast on Monday (10 October), The Athletic journalist Phil Hay reported that Firpo, 26, has a new thigh injury.

Firpo returned to action against Aston Villa, making his first Premier League appearance of the season before missing out on the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace last week.

Robinson cannot understand why Leeds didn’t sign an out-and-out left-back in the summer due to Pascal Struijk, who’s a natural centre-back, having to play there in the Dominican’s absence.

“I can’t understand why they didn’t buy a new left-back in the summer transfer window,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

The position has been a problem for a long time.

“It’s not only Firpo’s injury record but his form that can’t be relied upon.

Pascal Struijk’s done a decent job, he’s filled in there. But I suspect it’s not his favourite nor his strongest position to play in.

With Firpo, you can’t rely on him so it was a risk going into the start of the season.”

Firpo has played just 28 times in all competitions since joining Leeds from Barcelona in July last year.

Speaking about Firpo’s issue earlier this week, Hay said: “I’m told that he’s got a slight thigh problem.

“Firpo almost falls into the category of Bamford at the moment, the conversation about him of how it could be when you have Firpo in the team when he has a run in the team. He’s another player that hasn’t played much at Leeds.”
