‘Question marks’ – Exclusive: Pundit says where Leeds chief is better off amid speculation
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson is not surprised to see Leeds United director of football Victor Orta linked with the likes of Roma for the job he has done at Elland Road.
Orta has helped oversee a huge transformation in West Yorkshire which has seen Leeds turn from a mid-table Championship club to one that currently sits eighth in the Premier League.
The Spanish transfer chief was instrumental in hiring Marcelo Bielsa as manager and has pushed forward with a number of transfer deals for players who now make up one of the most iconic Leeds teams in the club’s history.
Earlier this month, reports in Italy (via Sky Sports) claimed that Orta was wanted by Serie A giants Roma – something which Leeds’ managing director Angus Kinnear pretty much confirmed.
Robinson believes that staying at Leeds is a better job for Orta than it would be at Roma at this moment in time.
“He’s enhanced his reputation in the game. There were question marks at the beginning of his reign at Leeds with the recruitment of players but he’s certainly proved his worth since,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.
“He’s shown his commitment to the club as well.
“Are Roma any more an attractive proposition than Leeds in the Premier League? I’d question that because of what they’re able to achieve at Leeds and what they have achieved.
“With the players he’s been able to recruit and the way he’s gone about the job, he will get clubs [looking at him]. But at the moment with the backroom staff – the owners, directors, the board – stability seems to be key and Orta’s a big part of that.
“It would be very, very difficult for him to leave.”
