Pundit urges Leeds to reward Luke Ayling's 'fantastic' service with new contract
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United …
Luke Ayling should be rewarded with a new contract for services to Leeds United, according to Paul Robinson.
Firmly into his eighth season at Elland Road, Ayling has witnessed all the highs and lows of the club’s recent history. After being a key player in Leeds’ promotion in 2020, the 32-year-old was crucial in keeping them in the Premier League for three seasons, before once again being relegated.
Ayling has had his ups and downs, and his form in recent seasons has faced criticism from the Elland Road faithful, but his overall impact on the club remains. After the club exercised an option to extend his contract in February, Ayling is set to depart at the end of this season, meaning these next eight months could be his last in Leeds white.
Robinson has urged the club to reward the “fantastic” Ayling with a new deal but speculated that he may opt to depart the club in search of a new challenge after Leeds.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “It would be fantastic to see Ayling rewarded with a new contract for his service to the club.
“The way that he’s played over recent years, his leadership qualities that he still has in the dressing room. To have that long-term would be good. If the club reward him with a new contract it would be fantastic.
“But for him on a personal level is if he wants pastures new at this stage in his career. Is there something else that he wants to pursue?”
