Pundit slams ‘unacceptable’ Leeds United incident with FA set to make punishment

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Paul Robinson has blasted the fans who threw objects at Manchester United players after they won 4-2 against Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday.

ESPN reported on 21 February that Leeds face punishment from the FA after “a series of off-field incidents”, including one that saw Man United’s Anthony Elanga struck on the head by what seemed to be a coin.

It is understood that a supporter also ran onto the pitch at the end of the game and Leeds could now face sanctions.

On Monday, the FA were waiting for referee Paul Tierney to submit an “extraordinary incident report” regarding the disorder at Elland Road and Robinson feels that if anyone is going to be punished, it should be the perpetrator.

“It’s unfortunate it’s at Leeds again,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

It’s the minority who are, once again, giving the majority a bad name but it has to stop and there must be some kind of sanctions.

You would prefer, with the CCTV they’ve got in stadiums now, that the individual doing it would be singled out but it’s going to be difficult to do that and it’s up to the club to put in sanctions.

Unfortunately, the club will get punished because of the fans’ behaviour and, I’ll say it again, it’s the minority spoiling it for the majority.

But it can’t continue, it’s unacceptable regardless of whether it’s at Leeds or any other football stadium.

Player safety is paramount, especially if teams score a goal. Yes, you’re frustrated, disappointed and angry – but there’s no excuse for throwing anything onto the pitch.”
