Pundit scared for Leeds United after ‘huge’ injury concern for Illan Meslier amid Phil Hay update

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Paul Robinson is worried about the possibility of Illan Meslier spending any length of time out injury due to the lack of experienced goalkeepers at Leeds United.

Meslier, 22, went off with a hip injury in the second half of Leeds’ 3-2 win against Wolves last Friday [18 March].

We’re yet to hear about the severity of Meslier’s injury with The Athletic’s Phil Hay reporting on 21 March that the French goalkeeper is due to undergo a scan.

Kristoffer Klaesson made his debut for Leeds when he came off the bench to replace Meslier at Molineux.

The 21-year-old impressed in his 35-minute-long appearance but ex-Leeds goalkeeper remains worried about his former club relying on such an inexperienced shot-stopper if Meslier has to spend a good amount of time on the sidelines.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “I still think they’ve got a lot of work to do.

The injury list is worrying and the one for Meslier is the most worrying for me.

Klaesson is untried and untested and this was my worry from the beginning of the season, if anything would happen to Meslier, they haven’t got another experienced goalkeeper.

Klaesson’s a young lad who’s never had experience in the Premier League and he’s going to get thrown into the deep-end if Meslier’s not fit to play.

It’s been my worry all season.

Meslier’s done outstandingly well again but without him, it’s going to be a real strain as there’s no strength in depth in the goalkeeping area.

Meslier’s going to be a huge miss.”
