Pundit hails fringe Leeds ace Ilia Gruev after ‘tough’ performance v Stoke despite Farke criticism
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United …
Ilia Gruev performed well on his starting debut for Leeds United despite the disappointing loss to Stoke City, according to Paul Robinson.
The Bulgarian international was in the starting 11 for the first time for his new club after three minute-long substitute appearances since his late summer arrival. While the Whites suffered a 1-0 defeat, the former Werder Bremen midfielder made a good account of himself next at Ethan Ampadu.
Per SofaScore, the 23-year-old registered 84 per cent passing accuracy, one key pass and two tackles, showing his ability to regain possession and progress the ball up the pitch. Leeds’ attackers were blunted against the Potters’ steadfast backline so Gruev’s influence was limited, but encouraging signs revealed themselves across the game.

Robinson was left impressed by his first significant minutes for Leeds despite Daniel Farke’s criticism of his side’s first-half performance.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “He and Ampadu played well. He’s waited for his chance and got the opportunity.
“Farke’s been playing Archie Gray at right-back in the last two games, which gives Gruev the chance to come into midfield.
“I thought he did well against Stoke. It was a tough performance.
“In the first half it didn’t really get going or click. The manager said he wasn’t pleased with his team in the first half.
“It was a difficult first start for him but he played well.”
