Pundit hails 'excellent' Joel Piroe as most impactful Leeds summer signing

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United …

Joel Piroe has been Leeds United’s most impactful summer signing as he gives the club a new dimension up top, according to Paul Robinson.

The £16milion man has hit the ground running at Elland Road, scoring seven goals in all competitions, including a brace against Millwall. A large part of Leeds’ relegation was their lack of goal threat, but the Dutchman has solved these problems and helped fire his new side up the table.

While typically played as a centre-forward at Swansea City, Piroe has dropped deep for Daniel Farke and played in a number 10 role, while Georginio Rutter has led the line. Wherever he plays, the 24-year-old has proved a game-changer.

Robinson has hailed Piroe for his exceptional pace and positional play while pointing to his relationship with Rutter which has solved many of the club’s defensive woes from last season.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, when asked who the most impactful signing has been: “Piroe. With Rutter and Piroe, Leeds have got two options, whether it’s Rutter who plays high and Piroe in behind which is what they’ve been doing of late. That partnership together seems to be working.

“Whereas before, when Patrick Bamford wasn’t playing at times, Dan James played as a false nine, Jack Harrison was playing in there as a false nine – there wasn’t really a solution, there wasn’t really an answer. I think the most impactful signing is Piroe because he’s given that option.

“Piroe looks to be playing him in a position that he knows. He’s got great pace, he can read the game well and the relationship between him and Rutter has been excellent so far.”
