'Proven striker' – Exclusive: Paul Robinson delivers verdict as Leeds ready bid for prolific CF

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson is not convinced by Leigh Griffiths, despite calling him a “proven striker”, as Leeds reportedly ready a bid for the Celtic hitman.

Football Insider had reported that Celtic are looking for £12m for the striker who’s only played a bit part north of the border this season.

The Daily Star have reported that Leeds are readying a bid for Griffiths as they look to bring a proven goalscorer into Elland Road before the end of the January window.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “I can’t see that happening. It would be difficult to try to engineer a move from Celtic at this part of the season. That would be really difficult for Leeds.”

Asked whether the £12m price tag was fair, Robinson said, “He hasn’t played much this season, Edouard’s been starting for them.

“Griffiths is a proven striker but he hasn’t had much game time and I don’t think Leeds can afford to take a chance. Leeds need someone who guarantees goals.

“Leeds need to narrow their risk and look for a player who’s proven in the Championship. Che Adams has done it in the Championship, Andre Gray has done it in the Championship, Dwight Gayle has done it in the Championship. Griffiths would be a risk.

“I think Leeds need to sign one of those three names.”

Griffiths has been prolific for Celtic, scoring 109 goals in 223 games since his move from Wolves in 2014.

At 29 he’s still got years left in the tank but the big question is whether his form in Scotland could be reproduced in the Championship.

Robinson is right when he says Leeds need a striker who’s proven in the Championship but they’re running out of options. None of Adams, Gayle or Gray look close to being done at the moment and Leeds are said to be looking outside of England.
