Finance guru: Andrea Radrizzani investment verdict at Leeds United shared as £35m news emerges

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Dan Plumley has praised Andrea Radrizzani for admitting that he doesn’t have the resource to take Leeds United to the next level as he prepares to sell the Yorkshire club.

As quoted by City AM in December, the Italian businessman confirmed his intention to sell Leeds with it widely being expected that 49ers Enterprises will take control at some point in 2023.

Radrizzani said that out of respect for the club’s fans, “it is right to let those who can invest more than me go forward, and bring them to the glory of the past”.

The Times reported on 9 November that the 49ers have gathered funds together to complete a full takeover of Leeds, buying Radrizzani out of the club almost six years since he took control from Massimo Cellino.

Plumley isn’t too sure what Radrizzani’s stance means for Leeds in the short term.

He believes that on one hand, his spending might not be too big but on the other, he may need to in order to

“Logic would dictate, given the rhetoric there and given the fact it’s only a year away from him potentially walking away fully, I don’t expect huge amounts of money to be spent in that time,” Plumley told MOT Leeds News.

It’s a very honest take and a very transparent take to admit he hasn’t got the resources to take them onto the next level. It is a big gap going from mid-table to further up the Premier League.

It’s a new challenge for investment coming in. Any investment that comes while he’s still there will probably come back to the need to remain as a Premier League club to realise that value when it comes to selling the club.

I wouldn’t expect to see a lot of investment but any that will be made could be made to keep Leeds in the Premier League until 2024 and beyond.”

Despite Plumley’s prediction that Leeds might not spend too much money before Radrizzani sells up, it has been widely reported that the club is in talks over a club-record move for Hoffenheim striker Georginio Rutter.

Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reports the deal could be worth up to £35.3million.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are keen on signing this Wolves player in January.
