We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United

Paul Robinson has said that it shows how far Leeds have come that they’re being linked with “incredible” players like Douglas Costa.

Leeds were linked with the Juventus player in Fichajes, who claim that he has been earmarked as the replacement for Raphinha, who has himself been linked with a move to Liverpool.

Robinson said Costa – signed by Juve in 2018 for £36m – is a “top-class European player” who isn’t too old to make an impact at Leeds.

However, he also said that Leeds shouldn’t be looking to sell their best player.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “As soon as you hear his name… I mean what an incredible link.

“For Leeds, you think where they were last season in the Championship. Now, they’re mid-table in the Premier League and being linked to Douglas Costa.

“He’s a top-class European player and has been for a long time. He’s not that old either.

“He’s not played that much at Bayern Munich this season, whether Juve would let him out on loan or sell him permanently.

“It just shows how far Leeds have come that they’re being linked with players like this.

“It’s an incredible link but then you can link any players you want, if players don’t fit into the Bielsa system, regardless of the size of the name, they won’t be coming in.”

On Raphinha, Robinson said, “Leeds are in a position where they don’t need to sell their best player.”

Would we like to see Douglas Costa at Leeds next season? Absolutely.

Would we be willing to see Raphinha to get him? Nope. Raphinha is heading into his peak years and already looks Euro-level.

Costa still has a few years in the tank but he’s not a signing for the long-term.

Raphinha can be a world-beater long after Costa has retired.
