Paul Robinson reacts to Illan Meslier mistake on international duty
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United.
Paul Robinson has backed Leeds United keeper Illan Meslier to get away with his mistake for France under-21s this week.
The young stopper came out to pass the ball to a teammate, only to see it intercepted and concede from the sloppy play.
Robinson believes not many will have seen it and backed him to keep his confidence intact in the Premier League.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “That was a bad one.
“He nearly got away, but he got caught too far up the pitch. Managers obviously want modern players to play out from the back.
“I don’t think the world of football will have seen that mistake, so I think he comes back playing for Leeds with no pressure on him.
“His distribution is good, it’s just his confidence with distribution – I just hope that mistake doesn’t knock his confidence and I don’t see why it should.”
There was no time for Meslier to be sat around moping after this mistake, as he had to return to Yorkshire to prepare for the clash against Liverpool.
Bypassing the press of the Reds will be critical to getting on the front foot, and the distribution of our keeper could be critical.
Meslier is always in the line of fire under Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road, and just because something goes wrong, he doesn’t expect it to stop you from doing it again.
The young Frenchman became our undisputed number one this way, and we will no doubt see the young, fearless stopper return this weekend.
