Paul Robinson reacts as Leeds United watch over Huddersfield ace Lewis O'Brien

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United

Paul Robinson isn’t getting excited about the prospect of Leeds United signing Huddersfield midfielder Lewis O’Brien this month.

According to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay, Marcelo Bielsa watched O’Brien, 22, play for Huddersfield on Sunday as they beat Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.

O’Brien put in a man of the match shift as he scored the winning penalty for the Terriers in the shoot-out [WhoScored].

However, O’Brien is hardly a well-known name among Leeds fans despite his impressive performances at the John Smith’s Stadium.

And that means ex-Leeds goalkeeper Robinson is finding it difficult to get excited by the potential deal for the Huddersfield man.

While Leeds may have a headstart on getting information on O’Brien due to ex-Under-23s boss Carlos Corberan being their manager, Robinson has doubts about his ability to step up to the Premier League.

“He’s a good player but I don’t know if he’s Premier League standard and the level Leeds want to get to because they want to push on,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

Obviously the manager knows him really well with Corberan at Huddersfield so they can get all the personal information as well as knowing his ability.

I don’t know how to put it but it’s not a signing that would excite me.

It’s not one you can see pushing Leeds on or being a guaranteed starter every week.

I’m still waiting for that signing you can get excited about and comes straight into the starting line-up.

We haven’t got one of those yet.”

O’Brien played 42 times in the Championship for Huddersfield last season, scoring three goals and supplying three assists.

The left-footed midfielder also won the 2019/20 player of the season award for Leeds’ Yorkshire rivals.

In other Leeds United news, everything indicates the Whites are set to sign this international midfielder.
