Paul Robinson reacts as Arnaut Danjuma sends come-and-get-me plea to Leeds United

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Leeds United should “fish in a bigger pond than the Championship” this summer, according to Paul Robinson.

The ex-Leeds goalkeeper says that after Bournemouth forward Arnaut Danjuma told Dutch news outlet VI that he would be keen on joining the Whites ahead of next season.

Danjuma, 24, was one of the stars of the Championship last season as he scored 17 goals and supplied seven assists in 35 league appearances.

The two-times Netherlands international grabbed two of those goals in the Championship play-offs as he netted in both semi-final legs against Brentford.

However, despite his impressive campaign and the fact that most of Marcelo Bielsa’s squad developed into the players they are in the Championship, Robinson doesn’t feel the Yorkshire club should be hunting for players in England’s second-tier this summer.

“He’s a good player but I think where Leeds are now and with the finances they’ve got, I don’t think they should be looking in the Championship for recruitment,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

They can fish in a bigger pond than the Championship now.

They’ve got the status, they’ve got the financial backing.”

Danjuma clarified his comments on Twitter after his interview with VI, saying that he didn’t mean to disrespect Bournemouth, only that he was trying to be respectful when asked about Leeds.

VI have since deleted a tweet that showed their interview with Danjuma, in which he claimed he had outgrown the Championship.

If we’re honest, it all sounds as though the Dutch forward angled for a move to Leeds and it backfired on him amid a backlash from Bournemouth supporters.

Still, the Daily Mail reports he isn’t short of interest with Leicester, Lyon and Wolfsburg eyeing the Cherries star.

The Mail adds Danjuma is “one of the most exciting attacking talents outside the Premier League” while his stats last season were on a par with Emiliano Buendia’s at Norwich before he joined Aston Villa.
