Paul Robinson: Raphinha may need to leave Leeds United to thrive as number 10

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United.

Paul Robinson suggests that Raphinha may need to leave Leeds United if he wants to play in the ‘number 10’ position.

Raphinha, 24, was handed a start alongside Dan James and Jack Harrison in the Leeds attack on Saturday as Wolves made the trip to Elland Road.

The trio played behind Rodrigo with the Whites still without centre-forward Patrick Bamford, but the quartet were unable to fire Marcelo Bielsa’s side to victory in a 1-1 draw.

Raphinha was forced off with an injury in the second half, but he showed enough to delight fans and ex-Whites shot-stopper Robinson in the number 10 role.

However, Robinson suggests Leeds cannot afford to play four attack-minded players given their current turmoil at the bottom end of the Premier League table.

“The more he’s given license to do what he wants, the less responsibility that’s placed upon him, the better,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News. “You get the best out of him.

“In the Leeds team at the moment, you can’t afford such luxury, but in a more free role I do think you will see a better player, which is why I think he’s linked to the top clubs because they can see that he won’t have that much defensive responsibility playing in a so-called top-six team.

“He’s a creative player and I liked him in that number 10 role. They played more of a 3-3-3-1, the old Bielsa system.”

In other Leeds United news, Adrian Durham has urged Marcelo Bielsa to make a big decision after this ‘astonishing’ development versus Wolves.
