Paul Robinson: Leeds should have had penalty in 1-1 draw v Liverpool

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist, each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has insisted that Leeds United should have had a penalty in their 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Monday evening.

Trent Alexander-Arnold appeared to handle the ball in the second half at Elland Road last night, but the officials waved those claims away.

Robinson believes it isn’t VAR that is the problem though in the Premier League, but the officials that are implementing the rules.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “It looked like it.

“It’s a difficult one again, you’d think that VAR is there to clear these obvious errors. That isn’t the problem, it is the people that are using VAR.

“As soon as people start talking about the referees that are implementing it wrongly, the better, it’s not the technology that is wrong.

“He has plenty of time to judge, I was very disappointed it wasn’t handball.”

Consistency.

We got the point in the end, but it should have far easier should we have been handed the penalty that we deserved.

Alexander-Arnold may have looked to pull his hand out of the way, but the ball still struck him there and if he didn’t, there was the potential of a clear-cut chance.

When you think of the penalty Liverpool got on the opening day for the Robin Koch handball, this was far more clear cut.

The rules may have changed, but that hasn’t made anything clear.

Mike Dean was to blame for this one, and it appears to change with every different official that is in charge of the VAR, that can’t be the case.
