Paul Robinson: Gelhardt could influence summer transfer window at Leeds

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United

Paul Robinson has said that Joe Gelhardt has a “big opportunity” to prove himself at Leeds and hailed how far the youngster has come on in 12 months.

And he made a major claim about the youngster, saying that Gelhardt could influence the summer window and prove that Leeds don’t need to sign a back-up to Patrick Bamford.

Marcelo Bielsa talked about Gelhardt in his last press conference and was asked how close he was to his Premier League debut.

Bielsa said, “These questions are answered when the player competes and shows that he is ready.

“He has a role in which he occupies in the squad. He is where he is on merit with regards to the players that the club possesses. But to say how he’s going to play when it is his turn is difficult.”

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “It just shows how far he’s come in the last 12 months and what the manager thinks of him.

“I don’t think he’s going to start games if Patrick Bamford is fit but this is his big opportunity for the manager to take a look at him in the Premier League.

“He might influence Bielsa’s transfer activity in the summer. This is his opportunity to prove that he doesn’t need to sign another striker in the summer.

“Bielsa has hinted that he’ll get minutes so he obviously thinks very highly of him.

“This is his opportunity to show what he can do. Leeds are definitely safe already, they’ve got more than enough points and it gives Bielsa the opportunity to take a look at his talented youngsters.”

Gelhardt is doing everything possible to earn his senior Leeds debut.

He scored a hat-trick for the Leeds Under-23s last time out and scored for the England Under-19s as they beat Arsenal’s youth side 6-1 over the weekend.

Leeds play Sheffield United next time out where a win would take them over the 40-point mark and realistically guarantee Premier League safety.

That’s when we expect Gelhardt to be unleashed into the senior side.
