Paul Robinson expects permanent Helder Costa exit, says Leeds United may get £8m

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United

Paul Robinson expects to see Helder Costa leave Leeds United permanently next year after he was loaned out to Valencia on deadline day this week.

Costa, 27, was in and out of Marcelo Bielsa’s plans last season and the arrival of Daniel James from Manchester United on Tuesday morning forced the ex-Wolves winger further down the pecking order.

His move to Valencia was announced after the 11pm transfer cut-off with Leeds confirming that the Spaniards have the option to sign him permanently next summer.

Ex-Leeds goalkeeper Robinson isn’t surprised to see Costa move on.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, he said: “I don’t think there was any surprise – we all knew that one was coming from the end of last season.

I’m just surprised it took so long.

I don’t think his performances were what they should have been last year and Leeds have improved the squad by signing James.”

It remains to be seen what kind of fee Leeds have agreed with Valencia for them to sign Costa permanently next summer.

While Robinson feels that a good season by the one-time Portugal international could lead to increased interest, he doubts Leeds will be able to recoup the £16million paid for him last year [BBC Sport].

Instead, Robinson feels Leeds may have to settle for half of that – or worse.

“A fee will have been discussed but a lot will depend on his performances this season,” he added.

If he plays well, there will be more suitors for him – there won’t just be Valencia.

Leeds will be looking to recoup what they paid for him but I don’t think they’ve got any chance unless he has a really good season.

They’ll want him off the books, they’ll want money for him but it all depends on how he performs this season.

I think they’d want to get around £10million but realistically, it will probably be £6-8million with add-ons.

If you look at the money in Europe at the moment, especially around La Liga, there’s not that much money there for players like Costa who’ve been in and out of a team and haven’t done it for a season.”

In other Leeds United news, Trevor Sinclair expects this player to quit Elland Road next year.
